So this will be my 18th Vulnerability Vigil. I'd love for you to join me or support the work by acknowledging it in the media. I'm always hopeful that people will take up the Vigils in other places, as well.

As I write, Canada's fourth largest city, my hometown, is under water and closed down. I don't hear any leaders talking about climate change or the deeper problem of relying on the current global socio-politico-economic system.

Allow me to connect a few dots: competition and survival strategies led to millennia of cultures of domination and today's iteration of industrialization. Industrialization and its partner, marketing, have led to climate change and a global culture of not only extremely limited discourse but no thinkable thoughts outside the given frameworks.

My work is about challenging that current destructive paradigm and embodying the paradigm that needs to be adopted for humanity's survival.

I believe that cooperation not domination is the key to our survival, that letting go of ego is the key to cooperation, and that choosing vulnerability is the key to letting go of ego.

We are all in this together. Vulnerable bodies on a vulnerable planet.

As the creator of the Human Body Project, I make an intention to show up in vulnerability--naked and unscripted--to share that experience with other humans. I am thankful to those who join me.

How a Vulnerability Vigil looks:

  • In keeping with the Human Body Project ethos of solidarity in human vulnerability, I show up naked
  • Anyone is welcome to join me, as dressed or as undressed as they choose
  • We will hold a sign in front of our bodies, as a gesture of gentleness to those who are affronted by nudity

I've committed to holding at least one Human Body Project Vulnerability Vigil a month since January 2012.

Also, the Human Body Project continues this year at the Victoria Fringe (August 22-Sept 1, in an off-fringe venue) and as part of the Vancouver Fringe (Sept 5-15).

Victoria's Monday Mag called the Human Body Project fringe show, "the most relevant and powerful work at the Fringe."
