Vulnerability Vigil with the Commuters

Interesting to stand and watch an endless line-up of cars while doing the Vulnerability Vigil today. I thought of Noam Chomsky saying that not only do most people not know there's anything wrong they don't even know they don't know. Born into this world of cars and shopping and phones and stuff and labels and what does VULNERABLE even mean? Why would a naked person stand there with a sign like that?

It was nice to have a warm day.

CTV joined us, plus about 5000 commuters, I'd guess.

Human Body Project Vulnerability Vigil: July 25, 5:30, McKenzie and TransCanada

Human Body Project Vulnerability Vigil: July
Wednesday, July 25
Gather to greet rush hour traffic at 5:30 PM
SE corner of TransCanada and McKenzie, Victoria, BC

the Human Body Project
is a form of non-violent protest
is a cultural antidote
is a teaching
is a healing
is art

As a Western dissident and creator of the Human Body Project, I make an intention to show up in vulnerability--naked and unscripted--to share that deep experience with other human beings.

Authentic. Transformative. Healing.

I believe that cooperation not domination is the key to human survival, that letting go of ego is the key to cooperation, and that choosing vulnerability is the key to letting go of ego.

My work is about walking the talk and embodying the paradigm that needs to be adopted for humanity's survival. I am challenged by what is required of me but I do it anyway. I am thankful to those who join me.

How it will look:

  • In keeping with the Human Body Project ethos of solidarity in human vulnerability, I will be naked
  • Anyone is welcome to join me, dressed or as undressed as you would like to be
  • We will hold a sign in front of our bodies that spells the word VULNERABLE
  • Plus whatever else emerges

I've committed to holding at least one Human Body Project Vulnerability Vigil a month during 2012 (see the Human Body Project Facebook page for the most up to date information and photos).

Also, the Human Body Project continues this year at the Victoria Fringe, August 23-September 2.

Last year, Victoria's Monday Mag called the Human Body Project fringe show, "the most relevant and powerful work at the Fringe."

The Human Body Project at the Victoria Fringe--Coming Soon

I've been working on my poster for the Victoria Fringe today.
Here's the version I'm going to go with if the printers think it will work...

July Vulnerability Vigil TBA

Here we are at the last Vulnerability Vigil. We are always a bit of a spectacle for the tourists. (That's me in the hat with my little one helping us out.)

One woman, who looked like she might be from India, took our picture and said: "This is not my culture."

I said: "This is not my culture either."

It's always challenging for me to put myself out there like this.

My friend and colleague Anne Cirillo and I are deciding where the next Vigil should be.

We're thinking the heart of Esquimalt in a couple of weeks. Stay tuned.

Antidotal Anthem Lyrics, A Kanadjia Day Offering

Since I often observe that many Canadians don't know the words to our national anthem and since I find the official version quite offensive, here is my own antidotal version as a Canada Day offering. I find it cheers me up quite a bit to sing it at school assemblies and so on.

O Canada!
Our home on the natives' land!
True patriot love in all thy daughters command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free... ish!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
Goddess keep our land glorious and free... ish!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
