Human Body Project Vulnerability Vigil (Feb. 29): Media Release

Human Body Project Vulnerability Vigil (second monthly outside action of 2012)

In solidarity with vulnerable humanity.

Takes place on Leap Year Day, Wed. Feb. 29, 4:30 PM, Centennial Sqaure, Victoria.
Victoria-based artist, mother, and university professor, Tasha Diamant, says she has long believed that the Human Body Project needs to go outside, beyond protest-inspired performance art in an enclosed space to artistic protest in the outside world.
Says Diamant: "I had thought that it would occur spontaneously, like when people started to join me naked at performances. But that hasn't happened and the Human Body Project's key message of cultural change through understanding and viscerally feeling vulnerability is more important than ever."
She has decided to organize monthly Human Body Project Outside Actons.
The first one took place on New Year's Day at Cadboro Bay in Victoria. (Here is a link to the story in the Times Colonist: http://www.timescolonist.com/technology/Artists+demonstrators+shed+their+clothes+Saanich+Gyro+Park/5938997/story.html)
Diamant created her challenging work to address "these times of great urgency, where our neurobiological, cultural patterns and structures are the actual cause of our destructive, unsustainable way of living."

The Human Body Project (humanbodyproject.com) is Diamant's work to create an experience and consciousness of non-domination. At public Human Body Project events, she shares an intense experience of abiding in vulnerability by appearing naked, authentic, and unscripted.

As seen at the Victoria Fringe, 2011 and 2010:

"This is the most relevant and powerful work at the Fringe." Monday Mag, 2011.

"Everyone should attend a session of the Human Body Project at least once." culturevulturevictoria.com, 2011

WHERE/WHEN/WHAT
The second Human Body Project Outside Action: Leap Year Day Vulnerability Vigil will take place near the giant Sequoia tree in Centennial Square, downtown Victoria, BC.
Diamant and supporters will gather at 4:30 PM to prepare to stand holding a sign with a letter on it.
In keeping with the Human Body Project ethos of solidarity with human vulnerability, Diamant will be naked.
Those who join her can choose to be dressed or undressed.
In a gesture of gentleness for those who are affronted by nudity, Diamant has asked her supporters to hold the signs in front of their bodies.
The signs held in front of the human bodies will spell: "VULNERABLE." If enough people show up, they will spell the phrase: "VULNERABLE BODIES VULNERABLE PLANET"
